Myth #14: CBD Has No Side Effects Whatsoever
Quick Fact
CBD side effects are real, though generally mild. Most people tolerate CBD very well, but it is not completely without effect. The most commonly reported side effects include dry mouth, mild drowsiness at high doses, changes in appetite, and digestive upset. These are generally dose-dependent and temporary.
The Full Story
Cannabidiol (CBD) is generally safer than many pharmaceuticals, and serious side effects are rare. But claiming it has no side effects at all is inaccurate and can give consumers a false sense of security.
The most commonly reported side effects include dry mouth, mild sedation at higher doses, changes in appetite (either increased or decreased), and loose stools or digestive discomfort — particularly with oil-based products at high doses. Dry mouth is caused by CBD’s interaction with salivary gland receptors. These effects are generally mild and often resolve as the body adjusts or as the dose is refined. Some users also notice that effects feel less pronounced over time as the body adjusts — this is known as tolerance. Taking a short break, sometimes called a tolerance reset, can restore sensitivity.
Are CBD Side Effects Serious?
For most people at normal doses, no — CBD side effects are not serious. They are typically mild, temporary, and dose-dependent. There are two exceptions worth knowing about.
More significant is the potential for interaction with certain medications — see our Myth #15 on CBD and drug interactions for important detail. One side effect worth noting separately: some studies have shown that at very high doses, CBD can cause elevated liver enzymes. Anyone using high-dose CBD over an extended period should consider having their liver enzymes monitored.
The WHO’s comprehensive safety review concluded that CBD is generally well tolerated — but that does not mean it’s side-effect-free. Treat CBD the same way you would any supplement — with awareness of how your body responds to it.
