Quick Fact
Is CBD safe for dogs and cats? It can be, but not in the same way as for humans. Dogs and cats both process cannabinoids differently from humans and from each other. Dogs have a higher density of cannabinoid receptors in the brain, making them especially sensitive to THC. Cats process cannabinoids more slowly, meaning compounds linger in their system longer. Both species can have serious reactions to THC — which must be completely absent from any pet product. Always consult a veterinarian before giving CBD to your pet.
The Full Story
The endocannabinoid system is the body’s built-in network for regulating mood, sleep, appetite, immune response, and pain. It exists in humans, dogs, cats, and most other mammals. It responds to cannabinoids — naturally occurring chemical compounds found in the hemp plant — which is why cannabidiol (CBD) can affect pets as well as humans. But the endocannabinoid system does not work identically across species, and safety assumptions that apply to people do not automatically transfer to animals.
CBD itself is non-psychoactive and generally well tolerated in pets. The problem is that many CBD products — even those marketed as pet-friendly — are derived from hemp that naturally contains trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). While these amounts are too small to affect most humans, they can be dangerous for pets. This is why the source and quality of any pet CBD product matters enormously.
Dogs have a higher density of cannabinoid receptors in their brains than humans, making them significantly more sensitive to THC. Even trace amounts that would have no effect on a person can cause THC toxicity in a dog — symptoms include disorientation, inability to walk, urinary incontinence, sensitivity to light and sound, and vomiting. Any pet product must be verified THC-free through third-party testing.
The CBD market is largely unregulated, which means some products labeled as THC-free actually contain detectable levels of THC. Do not rely on the label alone. Always look for a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from an independent lab that confirms non-detectable THC levels before giving any product to your pet.
Is CBD Safe for Cats?
Cats process these compounds more slowly due to differences in how their livers function, meaning CBD stays in their systems longer. This slower processing affects how often you dose and makes it especially important to use formulations designed specifically for cats.
Dosing is also very different from humans. Pet products are formulated for animal body weights and sensitivities. Human products are not, and should never be used as a substitute. Research suggests a daily dose of around 4mg per kg of body weight is generally well tolerated in dogs. For cats, dosing research is less established — start lower and follow your veterinarian’s guidance closely. The ASPCA’s FAQ on CBD for pets is an authoritative starting point. Always discuss with your veterinarian before starting, especially if your pet is taking any other medications.
