Quick Fact
Will CBD get my dog high? No. CBD will not intoxicate your pet. The intoxicating effects of cannabis come from THC, not CBD. A properly formulated, THC-free pet product will not cause intoxication in dogs or cats. The concern is not CBD itself — it is making absolutely sure the product contains no THC.
The Full Story
This myth keeps many pet owners from exploring CBD as a wellness option for their animals, which is a shame given the growing body of evidence for its benefits. The confusion is understandable — marijuana has a well-known reputation for intoxicating effects. But those effects come entirely from THC, and a properly formulated pet product contains none. Understanding this distinction is the key to making a confident decision for your pet.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is non-psychoactive in pets for the same reason it is non-psychoactive in humans. It does not bind to CB1 receptors in the brain the way tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) does. A pet given an appropriate dose of a legitimate, THC-free product cannot become intoxicated.
What Will CBD Do to My Dog If It Is THC-Free?
What pets often show after taking a proper product is relaxation, reduced anxiety behaviors, or improved mobility — effects sometimes mistaken for sedation or intoxication, but which are simply the absence of stress or discomfort. That is not a high. It is a calmer, more comfortable animal.
The genuine risk is THC, not CBD. Products mislabeled as THC-free that actually contain THC, or human products with trace THC given to pets in human-sized doses, can cause THC toxicity in dogs and cats. If your pet ever accidentally ingests a THC-containing product and shows signs of toxicity, contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately.
