Myth #24: CBD Is Only Useful for Anxious Pets

Quick Fact

Is CBD only good for anxious pets? Not at all. While CBD is well known for helping anxious animals, its potential benefits go well beyond anxiety. Research and veterinary experience suggest it may also support joint health, mobility, seizure management, general comfort, and overall wellness in dogs and cats.

The Full Story

The connection between cannabidiol (CBD) and pet anxiety is strong — and well supported. CBD has shown genuine promise in reducing anxiety-related behaviors in dogs, including separation anxiety, noise phobias such as thunderstorms and fireworks, and situational stress. This is the most studied and well-supported application in veterinary contexts. If your dog is fearful during fireworks or struggles with being left alone, CBD is one of the more evidence-backed natural options available. But it is far from the only thing it may help with.

The endocannabinoid system is the body’s built-in network for regulating mood, sleep, appetite, immune response, and pain. It responds to cannabinoids — naturally occurring chemical compounds in the hemp plant — and influences far more than mood in pets. Research and real-world veterinary experience suggest CBD may also be beneficial for joint health and mobility. Studies in dogs with severe joint disease have shown meaningful improvements in comfort and activity levels. CBD has also shown promise in reducing seizures in dogs, and some veterinary neurologists use it alongside conventional seizure medications.

Is CBD Only Good for Anxious Pets, or Can Older Animals Benefit Too?

Older pets dealing with the general discomforts of aging — stiffness, reduced activity, and changes in sleep — may benefit from CBD as a daily supplement. This is one of the fastest-growing areas of pet wellness. The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine has published accessible guidance on cannabinoids in animals.
